How it is calculated
sale price = price × (1 − d1/100) × (1 − d2/100)
Stacked discounts do not add up: 20 % off and then another 10 % off equals 28 %, not 30 %.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 30 % off?
Multiply the price by 0.70. An $80 item becomes $56.
Why is 20 % + 20 % not 40 %?
The second discount applies to the already reduced price: 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64, i.e. 36 % off.
How do I find the original price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). $56 after 30 % off was $80.
