How it is calculated
T (N·m) = 9550 × P (kW) / n (rpm)
T (lbf·ft) = 5252 × P (HP) / n (rpm)
At the same power, a 4-pole motor (about 1750 rpm at 60 Hz) delivers twice the torque of a 2-pole motor (about 3500 rpm).
Frequently asked questions
How much torque does a 10 HP motor produce at 1750 rpm?
T = 5252 × 10 / 1750 = 30 lbf·ft, about 40.7 N·m.
How does a VFD affect torque?
Below base frequency the motor can deliver rated torque; above it, power stays constant and torque falls.
